The society has only erected two new signposts over the last 12 months. As far as our Signpost Officer, David Morton, can tell,
this is the lowest number over the society's 130 year history except during World Wars I and II. It is
certainly the fewest during his 18 years in post.
This is not for lack of funds or efforts from him or his support team. David has repeatedly asked our trustees
and members for potential signpost locations, but sadly very few ideas have been forthcoming. The society is still little known
in various parts of the PNFS territory, and he would especially welcome suggestions for signposts in West Yorkshire,
especially Todmorden, Hebden Royd, Ripponden and Holme Valley
Our signposts are what we are best known for, they are our “silent ambassadors” and many new members tell us that
seeing them on their walks has encouraged them to join the society. Signposts in places where we have none or very
few should translate into more members in those areas as well.
Likewise only one new bridge (B48) has been financed in the last 5 years. It stands on Dean Beck on the west side of Keighley,
where we have or had 3 bridges (1 was washed away in 2015) and 5 signposts, thanks to Bradford's well-run and co-operative PROW Team,
who own and maintain the bridges. Many near-bankrupt highway authorities are understandably reluctant to accept our offers of
funding for new bridges, which they then have to insure and maintain.
The erection and maintenance of our unique and eye-catching signposts is a vital part of the society's work, so please look at the
list of “Signpost Considerations”.
