New footbridge handed over

A new footbridge has been completed over a stream and boggy area, thanks to the efforts of Derbyshire County Council and the generosity of a PNFS member (see also the previous news article New footbridge funded by a generous donation from a member). The PNFS had identified the need for a new bridge at grid reference SJ 998786 [map] on a path near Windgather Rocks, Kettleshulme and opened discussions with the footpath authority for the area, Derbyshire County Council.  John Harker, vice-chair of the PNFS, takes up the story: “I proposed the bridge as the area was quite boggy and I had to balance on two slippery logs to get across. It is a very well-used path as it is in a lovely area of open countryside close to Taxal Edge and Windgather Rocks.”  At the same time, a member suggested he would like to make a donation provided it was used for a new footbridge in east Cheshire or north-west Derbyshire.  The new footbridge has been welcomed by walkers using the path who have been heard to remark that “the bridge will really make a big difference in winter”. Councillor Joan Dixon, Derbyshire County Council's Cabinet Member for Jobs, Economy & Transport  said  “We are pleased to work with a long established footpaths society to deliver a significant improvement to the footpath network in this popular walking area. I would like to thank particularly their member who funded the bridge and our staff who were involved with its design and construction earlier this year.”
