David Hurrell (PNFS Inspector) and John Harker (PNFS Area Officer) have been pushing for major remedial works on Stocksbridge footpath 21 [map] for some time. They walked it last year and agreed to lobby SCC to do the work. The path is in a very scenic area on the edge of the Peak District National Park leading down into the Ewden valley. It was badly impeded by shrubbery, gorse, and very boggy in places due to poor drainage exacerbated by livestock movement. Following the correct line was difficult and one had to meander around a bit to get through. Add poor stiles, and it was a mess. The photos show a big improvement and it's certain that it would not have happened without the society's lobbying.
Work has included:
Laying of hardcore
Temporary diversion and wooden bridge over ditch (actually on Bradfield footpath 5 which is the continuation of this path
beyond the parish boundary)
