Urban Walking, a new App, Historic England and a Walk around Manchester

I'm sure most of us still carry our trusty OS maps with us when we are walking in the country side, but what about when we are in towns and cities. If you are like me it is easy to reach in our pockets, pull out a mobile phone and open Google Maps to find the quickest way to a previously unknown location. But as Ned Vessey writes in this recent article we don't know what we are missing.

Doug Colton developed the society's Path Checker app several years ago. He has since created a number of similar apps, the latest features the 174 Marilyns (hills that are prominent by 150m or more above the surrounding land) across England. Doug worked in collaboration with the Relative Hills Society (RHSoc). As always, the app is free and can be download from App Store for iPhones and on the Play Store for Android phones.
