At the end of September, we completed our ambitious project, MoorLIFE 2020, which saw €16 million invested in bringing life back to the South Pennine Moors Special Area of Conservation. The project was financed primarily by the EU LIFE programme, with co-financing from Severn Trent, Yorkshire Water and United Utilities. MoorLIFE 2020 was designed as an enhanced continuation of the pioneering moorland restoration work already being undertaken by Moors for the Future Partnership, using scientific evidence to promote best practice and innovative engagement to communicate the importance of blanket bog.
To tell the story of MoorLIFE 2020, we have put together a Layman’s Report which sets out the achievements of the Project. Click on the links contained within the report for further details of the Project.
We were delighted to be awarded £1 million under the Nature for Climate fund, matched with £330,000 from Yorkshire Water, for bare peat restoration, through gully blocking, reprofiling, bunding, heather brash spreading, revegetation and sphagnum planting. This was alongside similar funding achieved by our partners in the Great North Bog, demonstrating an increased awareness of the importance of healthy blanket bog.
Although MoorLIFE 2020 may be over, the work of Moors for the Future Partnership continues. Conservation works are currently taking place under the Moor Water project, while our volunteers have been out in all weathers conducting our annual dipwell campaign. As ever, we extend our warmest thanks to them all for their invaluable assistance throughout the year
Weather permitting, many of us are probably looking forward to moorland walks over the Festive period. Before you go, why not download Explore Moor, our new app designed to help you identify the sights and sounds you may encounter on the moors. It's available in both Apple and Android versions, and allows you to keep your personal record of what you've seen
