A notoriously muddy footpath north of Sykehouse near Doncaster has been improved, thanks to a contribution of funds from the Peak & Northern Footpaths Society. The photograph shows John Harker, a PNFS Courts & Inquiries Officer, handing over a cheque to Lee Garrett, Head of Highways & Waste Division of Doncaster Council.  Standing on the new boardwalk constructed by Doncaster Council are, from left to right, Bob Proctor of PNFS, with Julie Guest and Stuart Horrocks of Doncaster Council.
“The path was affected by flooding from an adjacent stream and frequently turned into a quagmire” said John Harker, an Officer of the Peak & Northern Footpaths Society. “I suggested that, in partnership with Doncaster Council, the Society could provide funds for the materials of the boardwalk”. Councillor Joe Blackham, Doncaster Council's Portfolio Holder for Regeneration and Transportation, said he is delighted with the results of this successful partnership.  It is the second scheme completed with the Peak & Northern Footpaths Society.  He said “The Council is keen to support initiatives that increase opportunities for healthy activities such as walking, jogging and running. It is an excellent example of what can be achieved by working with community groups in these tough economic times.” Gavin Miller, Chairman of the Peak & Northern Footpaths Society, said “Quite often people who have enjoyed walking will remember the Society in their wills. They wish to support the excellent work that we do to protect the network of public footpaths in northern England. This project is a good example of how we can make a real difference and improve conditions for all the walking public.” The boardwalk was constructed during the summer by the Council's Public Rights of Way Street Scene team with materials paid for by Peak & Northern Footpaths Society.
